| Heard what Ben Stiller said about his own movies? Someone asked him on social media whether they should watch the fourth "Meet the Parents" if they hadn't seen the first three. And he replied: "The first two — yes, the rest — well, we tried." And that phrase "we tried" says it all.
The second came out in 2004. Added Greg's parents — hippie therapists played by Hoffman and Streisand. The conflict is no longer just son-in-law against father-in-law, but two families with different values. And that worked too.
His "we tried" is classic Hollywood diplomacy. Doesn't say straight up "this is crap," but doesn't recommend it either. For someone who was the face of the whole franchise, that says a lot.
For anyone writing scripts or producing, this story is a clear example of how not to do sequels. The first film worked because it was simple: guy meets his girlfriend's parents. The second expanded the universe without losing the characters. The third tried to cram too much in and lost focus. One more thought. The fourth one drops in November. Can it reverse the trend or will it just make things worse? Who knows. But the fact that Stiller openly says about the third film "we tried" — that alone is worth something. Because the most honest review usually comes from someone who was actually there.
